National Adoption Month
This November is National Adoption Month! This annual initiative is funded by the Children's Bureau, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through a partnership with AdoptUSKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway.
The goal of National Adoption Month is to provide outreach, raise awareness, and support professionals working tirelessly to find permanency for the children and youth in foster care. This year’s theme is "In Their Own Words: Lifting Up Youth Voices," and the goal is to create opportunities for young people to effectively share their voice and perspective. Hearing from those who have been reunited with their family, achieved permanency with an adoptive family, or entered adulthood independently, will help educate communities and shape adoption processes and policies for the better. This includes improving recruitment practices, training resources for families, and other important support services.

Begin the Adoption Process through Lutheran Adoption Service in Michigan
Taking the first step in the adoption process with Lutheran Adoption Service includes attending a two-hour orientation to learn more about adoption through foster care. Once you decide you would like to move forward, they will schedule an intake interview with you, you will fill out an application, and eventually, you will undergo a home study that usually takes three to six months.
Lutheran Adoption Service will identify a child or sibling group that might be a match for your family, and you will have the opportunity to view redacted information to evaluate whether the child would be a good fit. Once the match seems appropriate, you may begin visiting with the child.
After the child is placed in your home, adoptive families will be supervised for at least six months until the adoption is finalized. The process can be thorough, but Lutheran Adoption Service will work to ensure that children are able to go to safe, loving homes.
Lutheran Adoption Service as an Extension of Samaritas Ministries
Lutheran Adoption Service is an extension of Samaritas, a Michigan-based ministry offering hope and compassion in efforts to transform entire communities. Samaritas walks with those in need, upholds their dignity, advocates for equality and justice, and seeks creative solutions.
Samaritas and their adoption program, Lutheran Adoption Service, helps children who have been neglected find love, shelter, and guidance in a life-long family. In recognition of National Adoption Month this November, Samaritas invites you to consider what part you can play in this effort and encourages you to begin the process of adopting a child from foster care.
If you are unable to adopt at this time but would like to help this cause, your donation will help provide in-home therapy services, family support groups, support for the needs of the children, gifts for unmatched children, and additional training!
